    According to the memoirs of Elsie May More (1877-1971) , great x2 grand-daughter of Adam Spence (1739 - 1829), he had nineteen children in all, some of whom went to the West Indies and settled there. He had a lucrative dyeing business in Dundee and when he suddenly lost custom he enquired into the cause, finding that superior German dyes were taking the trade. Resolved to investigate the process, he decided to visit London, and so he left his wife and children (ensuring they were provided for) and walked to London, where he engaged himself in work with a German firm to learn their methods. He returned home and took up his business again, with good success.
