April 1852. He came 2 CONC to Melbourne with his parents while an infant. His father was a tanne 2 CONC r, and started operations on the Yarra River at Richmond, and was one 2 CONC of the pioneers of the industry in Victoria. He was educated mainly at 2 CONC the model school near Parliament House, Melbourne. He worked in the t 2 CONC annery and was given tuition in drawing by Joseph Lambert. At the age 2 CONC of 15 he started at the Architectural / civil engineering and surveyin 2 CONC g office of Albert Purchas, and served a five year apprenticeship. He 2 CONC also studied art and the science of building for 18 months. 2 CONT 2 CONT In about 1873 he joined the Victorian Education Department as an archi 2 CONC tectural draftsman under H.R. Barton, F.J. Smart amd A.M. Henderson. 2 CONT 2 CONT He came to Adelaide in 1876 as a senior draftsman in the Education Dep 2 CONC artment, under J.E. Woods for years. He won second prize for his desig 2 CONC n of what is now known as the Government Offices in Victoria Square. 2 CONT 2 CONT He then joined James Cumming as a draftsman and won a competition for 2 CONC the design of the Clayton Congregational Church, located on Norwood Pa 2 CONC rade. He also won a competition for the design of the East Adelaide Co 2 CONC ngregational Church. 2 CONT 2 CONT He commenced business on his own in 1884. He designed many important A 2 CONC delaide buildings, including the Commercial Bank, the offices of the N 2 CONC ational Mutual Life Association in King William Street and the Savings 2 CONC Bank in Currie Street. In 1906 C.W. He was a Freemason, and a foundation member of the 2 CONC S.A.
