Maria Carolina was born in 1842.  Maria Carolina's father was Henrique de Freitas Morna and her mother was Maria de Jesus.  Her paternal grandparents were João de Freitas Morna and Eduarda Maria; her maternal grandparents were  Manuel de Freitas and  Maria Rosa de Jesus.  She was the oldest of three children.  She had two brothers named José de and João de.
