Marriage/Union Notes
Lambert "Bert" Gaspar was born July 16, 1884 and married Anna Wieseler on January 21, 1913 in Polo, SD. Anna was born April 1, 1889. Father Burkel officiated at the marriage. Miss Anna Matter of Orient handsewed Anna's beautiful wedding gown. During the hard times later, she made first communion dresses out of her wedding dress.
The lived on the Anton Hardes farm for several years and then built ahome one mile east. All ten children, except Leo, were born at home with the help of a very good neighbor, Mrs. Alex (Jenny) Pollock. Leowas born during a blizzard and his father had to deliver him.
Living eight miles from the church and school, where all the childrenwere baptized and made their first communion was quite a hardship at times. But everyone expected to give thier children an education.
Some of the happy memories are: the Polo Bazaars, the July 4th celebration at Orient, taffy pulls, the awe of midnight Mass when all the family would go, swimming at the Clements, relatives coming from Iowa bringing apples and clothing, the barn dances, "Dad loved music and played the violin."
The memories you want to forget, the dust storms, the gasshoppers, picking cow chips for fuel, seeing my Dad cry while driving the cows to government pits to be shot. The horses injured in run-aways and having to be shot, and years of no crops.
In 1938 Bert bought a farm near Dell Rapids, and farmed until retired. His son Mike farmed it until his retirement, and Mike's son, Terry lives on this farm.
Bert and Anna are buried in Huntimer Cemetary close to their farm home.
