Robert was born in 1880.  Robert's father was David Thomson and his mother is Janet Crichton.  His paternal grandparents were Walter Thomson and Jane Adamson; his maternal grandparents are William Crichton and Elizabeth Leitch.  He has four brothers and four sisters, named Walter, William, David, Alexander, Elizabeth, Jane, Janet and Catherine.  He is the sixth oldest of the nine children.
