James was born in 1855.  James' father is George Oman and his mother is Harriet MacKay.  His paternal grandparents are Wiliam Oman and Elizabeth MacKenzie; his maternal grandparents are George MacKay and Ann Matheson.  He had two brothers and two sisters, named Robert, William, Ann and Isabella.  He is the youngest of the five children.
