John was born in 1762.  John's father was Peter Mowat and his mother was Helen Coghill.  His maternal grandparents were Donald Coghill and Jean Dunnet.  He had two brothers and two sisters, named George, Donald, Elspet and Margret.  He was the youngest of the five children.
