Donald was born in 1757.  Donald's father was Peter Mowat and his mother was Helen Coghill.  His maternal grandparents were Donald Coghill and Jean Dunnet.  He had two brothers and two sisters, named George, John, Elspet and Margret.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.
