Catharine was born in 1852.  Catharine's father was Alexander Mowat and her mother was Mary Lyall.  Her paternal grandparents were Donald Mowat and Catherine Calder.  She had three brothers and a sister, named Donald, Benjamin, Alexander and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the five children.
