Catharine was born in 1818.  Catharine's father was Donald Mowat and her mother was Catherine Calder.  Her paternal grandparents were George Mowat and Catherine Dunnet; her maternal grandparents were Alexander Calder and Catherine Manson.  She had four brothers and two sisters, named Alexander, Daniel, George, Donald, Janet and Elizabeth.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
