Charles was born in 1857.  Charles' father is Donald McKay and his mother is Elizabeth McKay.  His maternal grandparents are Hugh McKay and Catherine Sutherland.  He has four sisters named Catherine, Eliza, Christina and Jessie.  He is the oldest of the five children.
