Barbara was born in 1901.  Barbara's father was Archibald Campbell and her mother was Barbara Mowat.  Her paternal grandparents were John Campbell and Margaret MacKenzie; her maternal grandparents were Andrew Mowat and Elizabeth Reid.  She had eight brothers and four sisters, named George, Andrew, John, Archibald, Dan, Robert, Marcus, Alexander, Elizabeth, Margaret, Johanna and Hughina.  She was the eleventh oldest of the thirteen children.
