Isabella was born in 1864.  Isabella's father was John Bruce and her mother was Ann Christian.  Her paternal grandparents were William Bruce and Helen Dunnet; her maternal grandparents were John Christian and Jean Tait.  She had four brothers and four sisters, named William, John, Alexander, George, Jean, Helen, Janet and Ann.  She was the seventh oldest of the nine children.
