Sally was born in 1830. Sally's father was Hector Black and her mother was Margaret MacQuarie.  Her maternal grandparents were Allan MacQuarie and Sarah (Marian) MacArthur.  She had two brothers and three sisters, named Alexander, Donald, Ouna, Ann and Mary.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
