Ann was born in 1836. Ann's father was Hector Black and her mother was Margaret MacQuarie.  Her maternal grandparents were Allan MacQuarie and Sarah (Marian) MacArthur.  She had two brothers and three sisters, named Alexander, Donald, Sally, Ouna and Mary.  She was the fifth oldest of the six children.
