Jane was born in 1829.  Jane's father was Alexander Begg and her mother was Christina Dunnet.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Begg and Isabella Mathison.  She had three brothers and four sisters, named Robert, James, Alexander, Margaret, Isobella, Frances and Elizabeth.  She was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
