Alexander was born in 1778.  Alexander's father was Robert Begg and his mother was Isabella Mathison.  His paternal grandfather is Alexander Begg and his paternal grandmother was Isobel Cormack.  He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Robert, Isabella and James.  He was the oldest of the five children.
