William was born in 1846.  William's father is Alexander Banks and his mother is Elizabeth Banks.  His paternal grandparents are William Banks and Ellen Simpson; his maternal grandparents are James Banks and Margaret Bruce.  He has a brother and three sisters, named James, Margaret, Helen and Elizabeth.  He is the oldest of the five children.
