Jan was born in 1765 in Zaltbommel and his baptism took place there on August 15th, 1765.1  Jan's father was Roelof de Croes and his mother was Jenneke van Oosterhout.  His maternal grandparents were Cornelius van Oosterhout and Beertijen van Avesaat. He had four brothers named Cornelis, Adrianus, Gijsbertus and Leendert.  He was the oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Cornelis Gerardus and Geertruij Dina.  He died at the age of 69 on March 14th, 1834 in Zaltbommel.1
