Jan Aalten was born in May 1765 in Harderwijk and his baptism took place there on May 5th, 1765.1  Jan Aalten's father was Aalt Brandszn van den Broek and his mother was Bartje Jansdr N.N..  His paternal grandparents were Brand Geurtszn van den Broek and Hendrikjen Willemsdr Timmer. He had four brothers and a sister, named Brand, Hendrik Aalten, Klaas Aalten, Willem Aalten and Dirkje Aaltsdr.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
