Jan was born in 1754 in Eethen, Genderen en Heesbeen and his baptism took place there on March 28th, 1754.1  Jan's father was Blees Branderhorst and his mother was Aletta Ariensdr van Doeveren.  His paternal grandparents were Gerridt Harmszn Branderhorst and Ariaentie Bleesdr Versteeg; his maternal grandparents were Arien Lammertszn van Doeveren and Maijke Jacobsdr de Poorter. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Jacob, Gerrit, Arien, Adrianus, Bastiaan, Bastiaan, Arien, Maijke and Adriana.  He was the sixth oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 84 on February 6th, 1838 in Eethen, Genderen en Heesbeen.1
