    My paternal grandfather, Alexander Glassman, hailed from Bethnal Green until 1916 when he emigrated to America.  He told me stories about his youthful excursions to Hackney and beyond.  He and his friends used to hop on the rear of coaches when they tired of walking and some scamp would call out to the coachman "Whip behind!" and they had to scramble off before he flicked the buggy whip back on them.
