  She died due to a respiratory problem and/or pneumonia, Died of Influenza, at the age of 42 on June 7th, 1922 in Coryville. The funeral took place in Leonard I. Holmes family home. Her burial was at the Smethport Cemetery.³⁴

    - The story goes that on the night before she died her husband Leonard told Sara Lorraine Holmes that she should tell her mother good night. Sara remembers not knowing why she should but did so anyway. Saying goodnight to her mother that night was the last time she remembers talking to her mother.

      Passing of well known
      and beloved woman
      
      Clara Ella Holmes, wife of Leonard I. Holmes, of Coryville, died at their home June 7, at 2 p.m. after a short illness. Clara Ellen Holmes was born in Hazen, Jefferson County, Mar. 10, 1880, the daughter of Richard and Eliza Mayes. She was married to Leonard I. Holmes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank (editor's note: Francis' nickname was Frank) S. Holmes of Coryville at Ridgway, PA., Oct 12, 1904. Three sons and one daughter Richard, Homer, John and Sara. Homer deceased. Services were held at their family home, burial in Smethport, Rev. A.L. Pang officiating.
      
      Who can truly pay tribute to the beauty of character. Adorned with Christian graces she performed many works of helpfulness to which her sweet womanliness led her. Active in the church from her earliest days, she drank deep of the spirit of the Master and many works church and philanthropic in her home and town will miss her.Active, self forgetting service and consecrated Christian womanhood.
      
      Her life was lived on high level of love and service for others with a sweet graciousness that endeared her to all. to those that knew and loved her best she will continue to be an inspiration to do and be the best, and the Lord she loved and trusted will comfort and bless them.
      
      The singing was done by her cousins of Ridgway, PA. In attendance at the funeral from out of town were the following: Miss Sara Moor, New York CIty; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Mayes, Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Mayes, Mr. and Mrs. Keys, Mr. and Mrs. Will Smith, Mrs. Anne Vandervoot of Brookville, PA; Mrs. John Mayes, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mayes of Hazen, PA; Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Bell, John and Frank Bell, Mrs. Ruby Arnonld, Mrs. Charles Charles Ladmer, Mr. and Mrs. Burt Mayes, Mr. and Mrs. Delo Shaffer, Mr. and Mrs. Resihel, Mrs. Davis and daugther of Ridgway, PA; Mr. and Mrs. Claud Fisher, Mrs. Frank Tuttle, Mrs. Alvin Reese, Mrs. Lee Johnson.
