This misconception was based on the misbelief that the Cape was the dividing point between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
The Cape of Good Hope, also known as the Cape Colony (Dutch: Kaapkolonie), was a British colony in present-day South Africa, named after the Cape of Good Hope.
