Emily was born in 1921.  Emily's father was Tom Nicholls and her mother was Ethel Unsworth.  Her paternal grandparents were Cornelious George Nicholls and Emily. She had three brothers and two sisters, named James, Tom, Clifford, Ethel and Emma.  She is the second youngest of the six children.

Emily and Albert are married.  They have a son and a daughter, named Ian and Gillian.
