Valentine B. Montgomery was the son of James Montgomery and Julia Howard. He was born on Cartright's Creek, Washington Co., Ky. 5 Feb. 1814 and the family moved to Daviess Co. in 1816. (Note: Barton Wathen and family settled on Cartwright's Creek, also) He married 24 Sept. 1847 in Vigo Co., Ind., Harriett Wathen, b. 23 Dec. 1824 in Florrissant, Mo., dau. of Ceda Wathen and Rosella Spalding. Ceda is the brother of my great grandfather, Nicholas, and a very interesting man. He apparently went out to California as an Indian trader in the 1830's and came back and forth. Rosella is found in every census with more kids -- but never Ceda! He died in Trinity Co., Calif. and is buried someplace in the mountains - Rosella is at St. Peter's in Montgomery, Ind., and her husband's name on her tombstone is "George." Have no idea where that came from, assumably Harriett put the tombstone there and no place is Ceda ever called George! Valentine and his father has a large write-up in the Daviess Co., History book. Montgomery, Ind., is named for James Montgomery.

(CMB note: Another James C., b. IN 1825 d. IN (July 4,) 1902 also buried in St. Peter's, next to wife Rosanna C. Brown 1848 - (July 27,) 1930 and (previous) wife Martha J. d. Apr. 23, 1878 age 48y. 3m. 4d. "wife of James C., [note:] Rec. has birth Apr. 7, 1849" NB also dtr Celestinea d. July 24, 1869, Age 1y. 3m. 18d. "Dau. of Jas. C. & Martha J.")
