  • Wolf (Velvel) Rosenberg was from either Kiev or Kharkov in Ukraine.  His father was Berl Rosenberg, a hawker.  He and Sarah married in London's East End Synagogue on June 23, 1912.  Wolf was working as a tailor at that time, and they were living at 59 Cannon St. Road.  He then fought in the British army 1914-18.  In 1961, he and Sarah (Strouzer) were living in London's East End, probably near Middlesex Street in Stepney (Petticoat Lane market).  Sarah was very religious and kept a kosher kitchen, despite living in some degree of poverty.  Wolf was a prodigious drinker of beer and worked as a coat presser in a sweatshop in the garment industry.  Sarah took on the religious instruction of her nephew Sidney Strouzer, as his mother was not Jewish.  Sarah and Wolf had no children.

    I don't think any of these are Sarah and Wolf Rosenberg.  Sarah was
    born in Russia.  I met her once when I was about 13 years old, and I think she lived near Middlesex Street in Stepney (Petticoat Lane market.)  I can date
    it from the purchase of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight by the Tokens (1961)
    which I bought at the market.)  I was with my father, who found trips to the
    East End too emotional and therefore hardly ever went.  I don't know when
    she passed away.
    
    Wolf Rosenberg came from either Kiev or Kharkov in Ukraine.  His
    original name may not have been Rosenberg, as we have the typical apocryphal story about foreign names getting mixed up at immigration, according to my Dad:
    
    Immigration Official:  What's your name?  Wolf:  Velvele IstranevskiImmigration Officer:  I can't spell that.  The man in front of you is called Rosenberg, so now YOU are called Rosenberg!
    
    Family tradition placed Wolf in the London Scottish Regiment during
    World War 1, nicknamed "Jock."  I contacted the Regimental Association, but they could not find a record of any one of that name in that regiment.  Wolf was a prodigious drinker of beer according to my Dad, and worked as a presser in the garment industry (sweatshop making coats.)  Wolf was described as a very brave man.  Apparently, he witnessed a man decapitated after falling under a tram in London .  While onlookers gazed in horror, Wolf wrapped the man's head in his handkerchief and took it to the side of the road.  I had this story from my father and his cousin Cyril.  Sarah was extremely religious and kept a scrupulously kosher home, despite living in some degree of poverty.  She took over the religious upbringing of my Dad, as his own mother was not Jewish.
    
    Carleton, that's all I have on Sarah and Wolf.  I will get back to Cyril and see if he can throw any light on these questions, together with the others that I need to ask him.
