     Jacob Barnett is found in the 1830 census of Madison Co. AL.: Jacob Barnett, 1m-u/5, 2m-5/10, 1m-15/20, 1m-50/60, 1m-80/90. Is this 80/90 year old male Jacob's father or the father of his wife?? 2f-u/5, 2f-5/10, 2f-10/15; 1f-20/30.
In the 1840 census of Lauderdale Co. Al. we find: J. Barnett, 1m-10/15, 1m-15/20, 1m-50/60; 2f-30/40.
     The book "Old Land Records of Lauderdale County Alabama" by Margaret M. Cowart, we find Jacob Barnett purchasing 80 acres of land in Lauderdale Co. Al. on 16 Feb. 1832, Certificate #4779. He purchases 80 acres on 4 Nov. 1831 Cert. #4521, He buys 40 acres 29 Sept. 1832 Cert. #5292. Again he buys 80 acres on 20 March 1834 Cert. # 7155. He is also assigned 80 acres on 7 Mar. 1855 Cert. #43883.
     Lauderdale County Al. Courthouse, Deed Bk.6, Pg. 498. Barnett to Wright. This indenture made 1 Dec. 1835 between Jacob Barnett and Elizabeth his wife of the first part and William Wright of the other part do sell for $190.00 (hard to read) a certain tract of land lying and being in the County of Madison, State of Alabama known as the NE1/4 of Sec. 34, T4, R1E containing 160 acres & 20/100. The first deed shows Mark on 26 Mile Creek. He sells his property to William Hall on Oct 3, 1814. The deed is recorded Sept 2, 1815 by Tarelton B. Hall.

Notice at the bottom of the second page that the deed following this one is for Jacob Barnett.
That deed will be in the second e-mail.

The deed for Jacob Barnett is also selling his properto to William Hall, Oct 3, 1814, on the same day that Mark sells his property to William Hall. This deed is also recorded by Tarelton B Hall on Sept 2, 1815. Notice that it took a year from the date of the sale for the deed to be recorded. Notice that it mentions that Mark paid the twenty dollars for the property and in the description, this property begins in Mark's field. It would appear that they lived next to each other. It could have simply been property that Jacob owned, however, it deffinitely proves they knew each other.

      I JACOB BARNETT of the state and district aforesaid have in consideration of the
       sum of twenty dollars to me paid by MARK PITT of the state and district
       aforesaid have granted bargained sold & released and by these presents do grant
       bargain and sell unto William Hall all that tract of land containing twenty acres
        situated in Pendleton District South Carolina waters of twenty six mile creek
        containing twenty acres beginning on a red oak IN MARK PITTS FIELD
        thence west 35 pole to a spanish oak then south 94 pole to a spanish oak thence

The following letter was found in File Box 328, Lauderdale County Courthouse.                                           Lexington, 25 Mar. 1867
Judge Benham, Florence, Ala.

Dear Sir, Gideon Barnett, my father- in- law departed this life on 16th Inst. he died intestate, did not leave widow or children. My children are his heirs, they are minors incompetant to administer. Thos. N. Williams being the largest creditor and I believe a competant and suitable man to administer. I therefore recommend him to your honor, I would also suggest to your honor the prospect of ordering the personal property of said estate sold for cash as I do not believe that there could be a note made that would secure an administration".

   Zachariah Barnett married Polly Madison, Lic. dated 16 Jan. 1827. Sol. 24 Jan. 1827 by John C. Grayson, J.P. Marriage Book III, Page 495.
Zachariah Barnett is living in Madison Co. AL. in the 1830 census: with 2 males under 5; 1 male 15 to 20; (brother?) Zachariah is 20 to 30. And one female 20 to 30. Jacob Barnett age 50 to 60 is living next to Zachariah with 4 males and 6 females in his household plus him and his wife, and also an older male between the ages of 70 and 80. (who?)

To the Honorable John T. Haraway Judge of the County court of Lauderdale County Alabama.
The petition of Mary Barnett showeth to the Honor that on the 16th day of December 1840. She was by the orphans Court of said County appointed Administratrix of all and singular the goods & Chattle rights & credits of her deceased Husband Zachariah Barnett who died in said County, and your petitioner further showeth to your Honor that the personal effects of said decedent is insufficient to pay the debts against Said Estate, and that her Husband Zachariah Barnett died seized and possesed of the following lands in Said County to wit: the East half of the South East quarter of Section nine Township two of Range eight west containing Eighty acres, and that the Said Zachariah Barnett left the following heirs under the age of Twenty One years to wit: James W. Barnett, Franklin M. Barnett, Elizabeth H. Barnett, Irena C. Barnett, Lucinda E. Barnett, Mahaly A. Barnett, Alfred A. Barnett & Mary A. Barnett all minors.
Your petitioner therefore prays your Honor that Guardians adlitum (sp) may be appointed for the said minors, and that your Honor deem a Sale of Said land for the purposes aforesaid and as in duty bound will ever pray it.   Signed: Mary Barnett.    Recorded the 17th day of Nov. 1842."

Mary Barnett and all eight of her children are listed in the 1850 census of Benton Co. (Calhoun) Al 30th Dist. 24 Dec, 1850. Page 400, Household 121/121. The children's ca birth dates are taken from this census.

Deed Book 7, Pg. 22. Lauderdale County AL. 2 Jan. 1836. Barnett to White. This indenture made between Zachariah Barnett and Mary Barnett his wife of first part and Daniel White of second part. Sold to party of second part for five hundred dollars N1/2 of SW (part of north half) Sec. 8 T2s R8w (No acres mentioned). Claimed through the General Government of the United States. Signed: Zachariah Barnett, Mary Barnett. Recorded 2 Jan. 1836.

Deed Book 7, Lauderdale County AL., Pg. 579. Barnett to Whitaker. This indenture made 21 Dec. 1837 between Zachariah Barnett and Mary Barnett his wife of State of Alabama County of Lauderdale of the one part to Nathan Whitaker of the State and County aforesaid of the other part for the sum of hundred dollars, N1/2 of E1/2 of NE1/4 of Sect. 33 T1s R7w Containing 40.38/100 acres. When I went to SC I really only had 3 good days to research. I went to several different courthouses. I am trying to remember what they had. In Anderson I was looking for a civil court case. Those old court cases are deffinitely in the SC Archives in Columbia. The lady had to go down to the basement to verify if she still had it there. For any information you need from the archives in Columbia you have to go first to the local courthouse and get the roll number. At least that was what I was told. I already had that. The lady wasn't all that helpful. I could tell she didn't want to go to the basement and I wasn't allowed to go with her, so I don't know what they had down there.

In probate I remember looking at some old books. If I recall, they were indexes but I really can't remember. I wasn't really looking for Barnett. I knew that the Barnetts had been researched pretty well and you all had a lot of documents. I didn't have any of that with me so I couldn't check to see what all we had on them. I was only looking at Pitts. I remember saying to myself when I saw that record that we already had the information on that. I wrote down will, but it may have been the estate pkg. Since then I found out that Sherry only has what she found in AL.

When I was in the Deeds section of the library I came across the Jacob Barnett deed where he sold the land at the same time as Mark Pitts. I made a copy of that because I didn't recall ever
seeing any reference about it. It was an original handwritten copy.

The other record I got on Barnett was from the Oconee Courthouse in Walhalla. It was a typewritten copy of the deed where James Barnett gave to his child

All passes were issued at South West Point except for a very few early in 1801 that were issued at Tellico.

Daniel Barton & William Barnet are hereby permitted to pass thro that part of the Cherokee Nation in their
way to the State of Georgia . . . 2 Decem 1802

Samuel Adams with his family of sixteen persons has permission to pass into the Cherokee Nation at the Muscle
Shoals. This permission is given me at the instance of Double Head in expectation that this family will by their
industry & good conduct be of service in the plan of promoting Civilization amongst the Cherokees. 20th July 1802

Here is some Barnett info. From (Genealogical Collection Of SC wills & Records Vol 2) I can't tell what county or district they are in, but they are on the next page in the book of the one on James Strandridge Sr that has Charles Pitts and wife Magy. So I assume it is the same area.

Book A page 71 John T Barnett owned 149 acres of one half. The other half is owned by Moses Hendricks on waters of Georges Creek. Melinda Barnett the wido. Melinda Barnett vs Judy C & Rosannah J Barnett minors. Dated 15 Nov 1845.

Book A page 74 Elijah Barnett owned two small tracts lying on waters of Georges Creek one containing 50 acres joining lands of William Jamison and others. 17 acres joining lands of Moses Hendicks and others. Applicants petition. Nathaniel Duncan. David Harris and wife Luraney, Riley Corbin and wife Melissa. Thomas Barnett. Rial Barnett. Ann Barnett. Mary Barnett. Melinda Barnett widow. Dated 30 July 1846.

These I typed as they were in the book unless I made a typo. Notice widow on both is Melind.
