The earliest records I have on this family is David Gray arriving on the Ship “States Rights’ at the port of Philadelphia on May 2, 1853. Steamship sailed from Liverpool. Its manifests list David Gray, age 40, David Jr, age 13, Matilda, age 12, Samuel age 10, Thomas age 8, Andrew age 6. The country to which they previously belonged was “Ireland.”
Family history has it that David’s wife was Jane Mills. She died in Ireland. Mills is a middle name of Thomas and he told his children that was the origin of his middle name. Consistent with this, Thomas’ death certificate states his father was David Gray and mother was “Jarnes” or Jane (difficult to read script writing) Mills, of Ireland. From death and burial records, family letters and civil war records I know that David had earlier sons and daughters who emigrated to the U.S. These included James, Edward, William, Eliza Jane, Sarah, Isabella and Josiah.
The family lived at 613 Soth 18th Street in Phil. See 1860 census M653, roll 1151, pg 599.
David Gray died on October 28, 1864 in Phil. Buried at Mt. Moriah. Found grave. States David Gray, died Oct 28, 1864 aged ? years (weathered).
The following information provides clues where this family originated.
All family members were Presbyterian. The men seemed to be “weavers’ by trade.
Son Josiah Gray married Mary Gillespie on June 1, 1857 in Philadelphia. He reported on his marriage certificate that he was born in Ireland. He was severely wounded in 1864 and has extensive pension records from the 119th PA Regiment Volunteers.
Thomas Gray also enlisted in 71st PA Volunteers. He was wounded multiple times. In his pension file is a record dated April 12, 1915 where he stated he was born in County Tyrone, Ireland.
David Gray also enlisted in 71st PAV. He was discharged for consumption. His “certificate of disability’ dated December 15, 1861 states he was born in County of Tyrone, Ireland.
William and Josiah also enlisted and were severely wounded. Their pension records do not indicate beyond Ireland where they were born.
I have more information on each family member and their descendents to some extent. Does this information indicate a match to the family you are researching?
