Given as father of (my) Samuel Clements of Altibrian in the latter's 1854 marriage record in 1st Dunboe and also Sarah from Altibrian in same church in 1850.
There are at least 13 spellings of this name in my family history, culminating in my grandmother, who was known to us as Jeannie McClements. The Dictionary of Scots-Irish Names gives these names as a derivation of the Gaelic name, Mac Laghmain, taken to Scotland from Ireland and returning after the Plantation. "Most common in Antrim but also found in Derry and Donegal, it was anglicised or shortened to MacClement, a form of MacLamond and thus the name of a branch of the Clan Lamont. It has been in Co. Antrim since the early seventeenth century and in the late nineteenth century it was still being used interchangeably with McClamon, McClement and M'Lamond in the Coleraine district of Co. Derry."
The 1828 Tithe Applotment Book for Dunboe Parish has two men called James McLamon, one designated Jnr living on 7/3/12 arps, and one designated Snr living on just 0/2/0 arps in Altibryan. They lived on Plots 13 and 14 respectively, while a Saml McLamon lived on Plot 12. These are the only McClementses I saw in the TAB for Dunboe Parish.
1828 TAB
12 Samuel McLamon 11/1/37
13 James McLamon Jnr 7/3/12
14 James McLamon Snr 0/2/0
The 1831 Census shows a James McClement lived in House 21 in Altybryan; there are 5 males and 5 females in the house, all Presbyterian. It could be this James but he seems a bit young to be the head of such a large household in 1831. There was also a house belonging to another James McClement (House 32) but it was empty.
There are two other "McClements" households in Altybryan in the 1831 census belonging to a Nancy McClamont (House 19) and a Samuel McClamont (House 18).
Is it possible that James McLamon Snr and Nancy McClamont were the parents of this James McClements?
There is a James McClement in the GV in Altibrian in the Parish of Fermoyle - it is very likely this man. In Plot 8, Samuel McClement lived in House a (value 15 shillings), James McClement lived in House b (value 15 shillings) and Hugh Riddle lived in House c (value 5 shillings) and all three shared the 31/1/15 arps of Plot 8. Samuel paid £6.10.0, James paid £4.5.0 and Hugh paid £2.5.0 which suggests an uneven division of the land. Samuel also rented House d (value 5 shillings) on Plot 8 to Anne McClement and House e (value 14 shillings) to Robert McClement.
I believe this is the progression of my McClements family through the parishes of Dunboe and Macosquin during the Nineteenth century:
- My GGG G/F, James Clements, lived in Altibrian.
- My GG G/F, Samuel Clements, was born in Altibrian circa 1830, was still in Altibrian when he married Jane Finlay in 1854 but had moved to Ballinrees for the birth of my G G/F, Samuel McClements in 1865, moved again to Dunallis for the birth and death of his son, Thomas McClements in 1868, and had moved again to Ballystrone by the time of the marriage of his daughter, Sarah McClements in 1884.
My G G/F, Samuel Claments, having been born in Ballinrees in 1865, moved with the family to Dunallis by 1868, and then to Ballystrone by 1884, married Annabella McKeown from Ballystrone on 1885, and then moved to Lower Balteagh by 1897, where he remained during the 1901 cenus, moving to Ardvarness in 1906, where he died in 1925.
My G/M, Jeannie McClements was in Lower Balteagh at the time of the census in 1901, moved to Ardvarness in 1906 with her father and married from there in 1909. She probably moved with her husband to Garvagh circa 1910.
The 1901 Census for Altibrian has:
- a Mary McClements, a widow aged 60, living alone (I am not sure who this is)
- a William McClement, aged 53, bachelor, living with sister, Sarah Ann Moody, 53, and her two children
William and Srah Anne are the children of Robert McClaman, son of this James and also Sarah Jane McClammon, daughter of Samuel McClammon.
I strongly suspect that that the James and the Samuel who shared the 31 acres of Plot 8 (also with Hugh Riddle) in the GV, were my James and this Samuel. I think perhaps they were cousins as, if they were siblings, then they had three children who married first cousins!!
