This website shows the genealogy of two very ordinary Ulster-Scots families from the Bann Valley area of Northern Ireland, my father’s people, the Grays, and my mother’s people, the Gordons.
· The Grays lived in the parish of Macosquin, three miles south-west of Coleraine in County Derry on the west bank of the River Bann. They were mainly agricultural labourers, with no land of their own. The Grays married into the McClements, McKeowns, Gibsons, Finlays, Todds, Brewsters, Browns and Boyds. My great aunt’s name, Sarah Matilda Galloway Gray, strongly suggests a Scots connection may have been known to the family when she was born in 1889. That link has long since disappeared and the records to confirm it are unlikely ever to be found.
· The Gordons were small farmers from Lislea in the parish of Kilrea, half way between Kilrea and Portglenone. Fifteen miles south of Macosquin, Lislea is also on the west bank of the River Bann in County Londonderry. They married into the Bellinghams, Coulters, McKays, McCooks, Hannas, Thompsons and possibly McCarts and McIlhouses. I think the Gordon name speaks for itself as regards the links with Scotland.
