A man and his wife were convicted at North London Police Court to-day of being in charge of a motorcar while under 'the influence of drink’. William Bruce Low, aged 40, a company director of Powys-lane Southgate, was fined £25 with £4 8s 6d costs and his wife Marjorie Bruce Low, aged 34, was fined £10. Both were disqualified from driving for twelve months. Mr Low pleaded guilty but Mrs Low disputed that she was ever in charge of the car. Two policemen said they saw Mr and Mrs Bruce Low outside Finsbury Park Empire. They appeared to be having an argument, in the course of which they staggered across the footpath. Both went to Prah Road, Finsbury Park and entered a saloon motorcar. After Mr Low was arrested for being drunk in charge of the car, Mrs Low moved into the driving seat switched on the dashboard light and pressed the button of the self-starter. QUARREL SEQUEL
Director His Wife and Their Car Convicted in London yesterday of being in charge of a motor-car while under the influence of drink to such an extent as to be incapable of proper control. William Bruce-Low, aged 40, a director of public companies of Southgate, was fined £25 and his wife £10, both being disqualified from driving for 12 months. Police evidence was that while apparently having an argument outside a music-hall, the couple staggered across the footpath and entered a car. After the man had been arrested for being drunk in charge of the car, his wife moved into the driving-seat, switched on the dashboard light, pressed the button of the self-starter and when asked what she was going to do, she replied: I'll drive the car home. The woman disputed in court that she was ever in charge of the car and declared that she had no intention of driving it, but the magistrate said he was satisfied that she was in charge of the car, and that although there was no actual driving that was only due to the smartness of the police.

Mr Anthony Hawke, defending, said he was not in a position to contest the evidence that Mrs Bruce Low was under the influence of drink. But there was a question whether she was in charge of the car. Mrs Bruce Low said all she did was to move in to the driving seat as she got out. Mr Hawke went on to say that it was a most unfortunate case. Both were very respectable persons. Mr Claud Mullins, the magistrate, said it was owing to the smartness of the police that there was no actual driving. It was no credit to the defendants.
