Night In Cairo Ball Reunion
Members of the 2/28th Battalion and the 24th Anti-Tank Coy. Association were transported back temporarily to their wartime camps last night at the Night in Cairo Ball. Realistic palm fronds fluttered above entrances of the ball room's loges and pillars; desert coloured paper camels and pyramids decorated the entire balcony; at the back of the bandstand the Sphinx looked inscrutable; and loges bore famous names like Alamein, Lae and Finschhafen. There was even a "Shepheard's Hotel - other ranks only." More than 1.300 persons attended the ball, which is planned as an annual reunion for members of the association. The proceeds will benefit the Legacy War Orphans Fund. Among those in the official party were the association's patron (Brig. J. E. Lloyd) and Mrs. Lloyd, the president (Mr. R. Courtney), the secretary (Mr. W. Munachen) and Mrs. Munachen, and the treasurer (Mr. M. Tassell) and Mrs. Tassell. The ball committee consisted of Messrs. Ellis Waring (honorary organiser) S. East, K. Lyall, C. D'Arcy, W. Munachen and M. Tassell. A party of regular army officers staffing the 13th Infantry Brigade attended the ball. Other guests included members of the original 28th Battalion and of all Second A.I.F. unit associations, Mr. and Mrs. L. Rodereda and Mr. and Mrs. G. Crisp.
