Charles James Amick, a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Chicago, died of cancer on June 3, 1991, at the age of 39. He earned his doctorate at the University of Cambridge in 1977 and joined the Mathematics Department at the University of Chicago as an instructor in 1979. His work centered on mathematical problems in fluid dynamics. He was internationally recognized for his work on water waves, and made lasting contributions in a variety of areas of applied mathematics. He had a special ability to bring a deep knowledge of mathematical analysis to bear on specific mathematical problems.
