MATTAPOISETT, MA — Jane (Towers) Gowing, 80, of Mattapoisett, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2009, with family by her side, after a courageous two year battle with cancer.
Jane was born in Newton, MA, September 23, 1928, to Elmer and Gertrude (Lavigne) Towers and grew up in Wellesley, MA. In 1938, her parents bought a summer cottage in Mattapoisett where Jane enjoyed sailing on her small sloop, "SonnyJane." Jane graduated from Wellesley High School and Centenary College (NJ).
In 1951, she married Homer L. Gowing. They lived in greater Boston for several years, spent one year in Nassau, and settled in Wilbraham, MA, all the while spending summers in Mattapoisett. After Homer's retirement they moved year round to Mattapoisett.
Jane is survived by her loving husband, Homer; her daughter, Patricia (Gowing) Richardson and her husband, Philip of Simsbury, CT; two sons, Stephen Gowing and his wife, Marilyn of Canton, MA, James Gowing and his wife, Sara of Lower Gwynedd, PA; six grandchildren, Sarah Richardson, Anne Richardson, Mark Richardson, Kristen Gowing, Amy Gowing and Stephanie Gowing; and her brother, Herbert Towers of Venice, FL.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Mattapoisett Congregational Church on Sunday, October 4, at 2 pm.
