Dundee Masons Strike, 2

newspaper article
DUNDEE MASONS' STRIKE
MEN LEAVING FOR GLASGOW.
THE EMPLOYERS' ATTITUDE.
Yesterday forenoon the operative masons on strike in Dundee met in Blackness Halls. The strike roll was gone over, and thereafter an address was delivered by Mr David Rennie, organising delegate of the Scottish Operative Masons' Society. It was stated that inquiries had been made for masons from the Glasgow district, and that twenty men had left the city for the various jobs. Reference was made to the briskness of the building trade in the West of Scotland, and should a speedy termination of the dispute not take place in Dundee it is expected a number more of the men will leave the city. The Glasgow men have expressed themselves in thorough sympathy wiih their Dundee fellows, and would lend assistance when it was required. A Courier reporter yesterday had a conversation with one of the masters regarding the dispute, lt was stated tlhat the building trade was not so prosperous as one would imagine. Although some large buildings had been erected recently, these, it was stated, did not leave a satisfactory margin of profit, the contracts having been based on a low estimate. There were several jobs on hand, such, for instance, as the new temperance hotel in Whitehall Crescent, and should the estimates be based on the 9 1/2d and 10d rates of pay the cost would be greater than the promoters of the hotel anticipated. This fact had had an adverse tendency with regard to other buildings proposed to be erected, and should the men persist in their demands the effect would be decidedly against any forward movement in the trade that might take place were the cost of building not placed so high. The masters are to meet to-day to discuss the situation, and should no decision be come to it is expected little further will be done till after the New Year. The men have not approached the masters in any way since the strike commenced.
