Eleanor Florence Rennie Falkenberry
Eleanor Florence Rennie Falkenberry, 93, died Aug. 24, 2007, at Park Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born May 14, 1914, in Selma, the daughter of John Coe and Nell Foster Rennie.
She was educated in Selma public schools and graduated from Selma High School. She attended Brenau College in Gainsville, Ga., and graduated with honors from Alabama College where she majored in speech and drama and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Mrs. Falkenberry received a master’s degree from Northwestern University and was involved for many years in theatre in Selma. She taught English, speech, and drama at Parrish High School and for the University of Alabama Extension Center. She also worked as an educator with the Craig AFB Education Department, as Society Editor of The Selma Times-Journal, as Principal of St. Paul’s Episcopal day School, and as a counselor with Central Alabama Youth Services. She was an avid genealogist and volunteered her research skills for many years with the Selma-Dallas County Public Library and Central Alabama Genealogical Society. She was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where she was a teacher, counselor and choir member for over 60 years. Mrs. Falkenberry was also an accomplished gardener and noted for her beautiful African violets. She was a member of the Selma Garden Club, the Vaughan Hospital Auxiliary and the Ossian Club.
Mrs. Falkenberry was the widow of Roswell L. Falkenberry, former Editor and Publisher of The Selma Times-Journal, who predeceased her.
She is survived by her children: John C. Falkenberry, Birmingham; Anne F. Knight (Joseph S.) Selma; and Rennie F. Edwards (Thomas H.) St. George Island, Fla.; grandchildren: Kirk Knight (Sarah), Atlanta, Ga.; Chris Edwards and Leslie Edwards, Richmond, Va.; and her great-granddaughter, Madeleine Rose Knight, Atlanta, Ga.; A son, George A. Falkenberry, predeceased her.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Aug. 27 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Polk Van Zandt officiating. The family will receive friends in the Parish Hall prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Selma-Dallas County Public Library or St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
