    • Genealogist’s Comments:

This marriage is recorded in the marriage registers kept by Long Tower Chapel but it is not recorded in civil marriage registers, although Roman Catholic marriages in Ireland were subject to civil registration from 1 January 1864. Indeed seven marriages recorded in the registers of Long Tower between 25 November 1872 and 30 December 1872 were not recorded in the civil marriage registers. Civil marriage registers normally record the names of the fathers of both bride and groom.

Prior to 1873 Long Tower Chapel served all of the Roman Catholic population of Derry city situated on the west bank of the River Foyle.

The Derry database of civil birth registers records one birth entry of a child to parents William John McCarthy, clerk and Margaret Jane Wray, namely Henry Alexander McCarthy who was born at Rosemount on 5 March 1874. Rosemount is a district within the city of Derry."
