Robert's father was Archibald Cunningham and his mother was Elisabeth Anderson. His paternal grandparents were John Cunningham and Hellen Aitken. He had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Archibald, James, Thomas, William, Helen, Elisabeth, Janet and Elisabeth. He was the second oldest of the ten children. He died at the age of 44 on January 19th, 1835 in Broxburn. He was buried in Broxburn.²¹
