Jane's father was James Whitelaw Borthwick and her mother was Ann Wilhelmina Richie. Her paternal grandparents were Ramsay Borthwick and Jean Whitelaw. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Ramsay, James, David, Janet, Jane, Margaret, Ann and Mary. She was the oldest of the nine children. She died at the age of 1 in 1855 in Kirkliston.
