  • Died: Capt William M'CLUNEY was born in the city of Belfast, Ireland on the 5 of
    April 1770 and died on the 5th of April 1856 having attained the advanced age of
    86 years....married Jane, daughter of Col. MARSHALL, who deceased about 20
    years' since. Died at the residence of his son James McCLUNEY, Esq. in Wheeling
    and is buried by the side of his wife and only daughter.   Wellsburg Weekly

    Captain William McCluney
    
         Captain William McCluney was born in the city of Belfast Ireland, April 5, 1770. Came to Brooke county, Virginia, when quite a young man, where he resided until a few years previous to his death. He married early in life, Jane, daughter of Colonel Marshall of this county. Captain McCluney lived an eventful and active life. In early life he was surveyor of public lands in Ohio. He was identified with the "whiskey insurrection." He was commissioner of the revenue for the county of Brooke for nearly twenty years. He was postmaster at Wellsburg for many years. He was considered the best equestrian west of the Allegheny Mountains. For some years he commanded a company of troops in Brooke county.
    
         His wife preceded him to the grave February 9th 1835. She was a prominent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at this place. A son of Captain McCluney, James McCluney, still resides in the city of Wheeling.

    Captain William McCluney was born on 05 Apr 1779 in Belfast, Ireland.  He married Jane Marshel on 23 Dec 1800 in Brooke (West) VA.  William McCluney died on 05 Apr 1856 at age 86.  Jane Marshel was the daughter of Col James Marshel and she died on 09 Feb 1835.  They had two children:  James McCluney born ca 1812 who married a Caroline and Mary M. McCluney born ca 1809 and died on 25 May 1831 at age 22.
