    Feb 4, 1587-8. Rychard Marshall,* of Stainton-in-the- Street
    This wealthy clergyman, rich in land and plate, was appointed to the rectory of Stainton in 1538
    
    Streate, clerke. I gyve and bequethe unto Rycbard, sonne and
    heire apparant, unto my brother Gylbertt Marshall,* of Dentón,
    all those my landes &c., in Kylwyke Persie, neighe Poklington,
    Huton Bushell, Presione, Newton, Wykam and Easte Witon,
    within the countie of Yorke, and also all my landes &c., in Mor-
    peth, Newcastell-upon-Tynne and Elstwyke, within the countie
    of Northumberland, to him and his heires male for ever, and for
    defaulte of such, unto Thomas, brother unto the sayd Rychard,
    then to Cuthbert Marshall, brother unto this testator, to descende,
    accordinge to the trew meaninge &c., of one indenture, bearinge
    date the xxth day of Auguste, 22 Eliz. To Thomas Marshall,
    my servantt, all my landes in Corbridge, in the countie of
    Northumberland, and to the heires generall of his bodie, and in
    defaulte of such, to Roger Megson and Elyeoner, his wyffe, and
    then to the foresaid Rychard Marshall, for ever. Also I gyve unto
    my said servantt the lease of one house in Morpeth, which was
    my grandfather's, in the tenure of Robertt Olyver. To George
    Dobson, of Morpeth, and his wyffe, a lease for xxj yeares, and
    to their assignes, yf the said Rychard Marsshall do lyke, of
    assignes or assigne, payinge therfore yearly, for every particular
    as followeth, that is to saye, for the island close, 13s. 4d., presently,
    and 6s. 8d. for the mylle haughe, when they quietly
    injoyeth the same, also for one house in Aldgate, and hälfe one
    aker of land, in the tenure of George Dobson, 8s., and for the
    house at the west ende of the tollbouthe, in the tenure of Thomas
    Whitfeild, with one aker of land, belonging the same, in Stony,
    flatt, 20s. Also I gyve unto him and his wyffe 6s. 8d. To
    Rychard Marshall, my brother Gylbertt, his sonne, one sylver
    basen and one ewre, parcell gilte, in valewe 24/. 7s. 4d., one
    silver salte, with a cover, double gilte, in vallewe 6/., one stand-
    inge cupp, with a cover, double gute, in valew 10/. 8s. 4d., one
    dousan of silver sponnes, in valew 6/., and 151. in old golde, one
    gold ringe, with a stone in it, in valew 10/., one signet, with the
    Marshiall's armes upon it, of gold, in valew 31., my best fether-
    tory of Stainton in 1538. He came from Morpeth or the neighbourhood, and was
    a cousin of Bichará Marshall, registrar to the dean and chapter of Durham, whose
    will is printed in this volume, p. 25. *
    Of Newcastle and Dentón, со. Durham. He married Agnes, daughter
    and co-heir of Cuthbert Brackenbury, of Selaby, esq., and his descendante held
    land there for some generations. His will is dated Aug. 10, 1589. He leaves to
    his daughter IBelae Marshall с marks, to remain in his wife's hands, until she
    have a convenient marriage promised, at the discretion of Mr. John Conyers,
    Mr. George Tonge, and Mr. Nycholas Tempeste. To his sons Rychart and
    Thomas he gives land at Blswick, Northumberland. To Rychart his hougestead
    in Allhallowe bank, Newcastle. To Thomas his house in the Close in the same
    town. To his daughter Jane, the wife of Anthony Newbie, 51. The rest to
    Thomas, his son, and Margaret and Margery, his daughters, and they executors
