    "PATELEY BRIDGE, in the township of High and Low Bishopside and parish of Ripon, lower division of Claro, liberty of Ripon; 9 miles NW. of Ripley, 10 from Grassington, 11 from Ripon, 14 from Knaresborough and Harrogate, 15 from Skipton, Masham, and Otley, 16 from Kettlewell, 32 from York, 224 from London. Market, Saturday. Fairs, Easter and Whitsun Eve; May 11; September 17, (if on a Saturday,) if not, on the first Saturday after; Monday after October 10; and Christmas Eve; for cattle, woollen cloth, pedlary ware, &c. Principal Inns, the Crown, and George. Pop. included in High and Low Bishopside. The Church is a perpetual curacy, dedicated to St. Mary, in the deanry of Ripon, Virginialue, p.r. !£87. 11s. 4d. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Ripon.
    This is a small market-town situated upon the banks of the river Nidd, and may be considered as the capital of Nidderdale. It derives considerable wealth from the lead mines on the opposite side of the river, at Greenhow Hill, &c. A little above the town, there is a lead mill, where the manufacture of sheet lead, and lead pipes is carried on to a great extent. The market was granted to the Archbishop of York, in the 18th Edward II. when the King was at York. The town consisting of one street, is tolerably well built."

    Dr. Hebden immigrated to MD in 1635 (Skordas) and was shown as age 20. He was on the same vessel, "Bonaventure" as William Marshall that married his widow Catherine Payne. Margaret Fresco (Marriages and Deaths, St. Mary's Co.) states that he was transported to St. Mary's Co. from Kent Island by George Evelyn. He left a will dated 5/30/1647-10/16/1649. His wife Catherine was named Exec. and sole legatee.
    
    Catherine was transported to MD by her husband in 1640.
    
    Joshua and William were both named in their father's will in 1647.

    Editors: Thomas Hebden immigrated to Maryland in 1635, and in 1640 transported Katherine, his wife, who, by 1656 had married William Marshall (Patents 3:199-200, Gibb). He may have been the Thomas Hebden who was a passenger on the Bonaventure, bound for Virginia in 1634/5 (See The Ark and the Dove). See 1673 will of William Marshall who refers to his marriage to Katherine Ebden [sic]. (Calendar, Vol. I, pp. 69-81)

    1707: Hannah Harpham possessed "Hebden's Hole", 700 ac. in St. George's 100 which was surveyed for Thomas Hebden, 2/4/1641 (Chr. of SM).
    
    Hannah was probably the wife or daughter of William Harpham.

    "Pyney Point", 1500 ac., surveyed 8/20/1649. Patented the same date for Ralph Bean. Bounding on the Potomac River and Herring Creek. Possessor: 750 ac., Hannah Harpam; 750 ac., Thomas Palmer (by his marriage with the widow Waughop. The rent of this land is reserved in grain. (SMC Rent Rolls, 1639-1771).
    NOTE: The widow Waughop is Catherine Countenceau, widow of Thomas Waughop
    (son of John and Joanna).
    When Ralph Bean made his will, he devised all of his real estate to his brother, Walter Bean (aka Bayne). Walter apparently disposed of the property. At some point it was divided into two 750 acre parcels.

    In the Archives of Maryland (Vol. 51, p. 120-121, Chancery Court Proceedings) dated 20 June 1674 that was enquiring into the lands of Simon Oversee, dec'd. First, it states that Simon Oversee died possessed of St John's and 800 acres adjoining, on which Elizabeth lived for about a year and then it was "Escheat" to the Lord Proprietor, and since has been "in the possession of Charles Calvert", etc.
    
    The document goes on to state that Simon died possessed of "Hebden's-hole holden of his Lpps mannor of St George's in free & Common Soccage by fealty only for all Services", and that Hebden's Hole was "Occupied & possessed by W.m Harper to this day by virtue of a Lease from the R.t Hon.ble the Ld prop.ry" and all rents etc had been paid, etc. The implication was that William Harper had been in possession at the time of Simon's death.
    
    Would this be the same William Harper be the same family/man as "William Harpham"?

    I believe that Thomas Hebden who married Catherine Payne was b.1614 son of Christopher Hebden and Cicely.
    Christopher had two dau. named Elizabeth one b. 1585 and 1598 one of which died 1603.
    Christopher d.1636 names dau. Elizabeth and cousin William & Thomas Marshall and their sister Helen Dambrooke.
    This implies to me that Christopher had a sister that married a Marshall. I suspect that Christopher had a sister Elizabeth that married
    William Marshall that were the parents of William & Thomas Marshall and their sister Helen. I suspect that the numbering system in the following is a 1580 year date:(1580.0000 Thomas Hebden pltf v William Marshall & Elizabeth his wife concerning land in Little Habton Yorks Feet of Fines.)so this William was already married in 1580. I suspect the Thomas Hebden here is the brother of Christopher who also had a dau. Elizabeth who could have been the Elizabeth that married Matthew Marshall 1619.

    See MARYLAND GENEALOGIES from the Maryland Historical Magazine, Vo lII, pg 249:
    "James Neale, son of Raphael and Jane Neale was, according to the Visitation pedigree (Visitations of Bedfordshire, Harl. soc., xix , 43,125, 185) "3 yere old 1618," and was therefore born in 1615. He came to Maryland about 1636 or 1637. On 19 June 1641, James Neale , Gent.,demands 1000 acres of land due him for transporting himself and five servants into the Province "since the year 1635" (Land Office, Lib ABH,fol. 95; Md. HIst. Mag., vi, 200), and he appears upon record as living in Maryland in 1638 (Md. Archives, iii, 78), so that he must have arrived in the Province between 1635 and 1648. In accordance with his entry of rights, mentioned above, he received a warrant for 1000 acres which he assigned to Thomas Hebden. But he had received a special warrant from Lord Baltimore, dated at London 25 July, 1641, and by the terms of this warrant he received a patent, dated 31 October 1642, for a manor of 2000 acres "to be called Wolleston Manor, with Court Leet and Court Baron" etc. (Md.Hist.Mag. vi, 201- 202). This manor, situated in what was later Charles County was long the principal residence of the Neale Family. The fact that James Neale called his Maryland manor"Wollaston," is a strong indication of his descent from the Northampton family, and it may be prett y safely assumed that he was the son of Raphael Neale of Drury Lane, London, and of Wallaston, Co. Northampton, mentioned in the Visitation pedigree

    Editors: On 17 Apr 1639, "Thomas Gerrard and Henry Hooper chirurgions deposed vpon their corporall oath touching the last will and testament of Richard Lee who deceased at Sr Johns on the last day of march this pnt yeare; in manner & forme following; that is to say; that the said Richard Lee being of perfect & sound sense & memory, thoughe weake in body, and wished by the said Thomas Gerard to declare his mind how he would dispose of his estate after his death, did answere and say, first that his will was that Humphrey and Anne his maid should be free. Item, he willed that mrs Lewger should have a sattin petticoate wch was his wives, worth 10 l. Item that the remainder of all his estate after all charges defrayed, should be sent to mrs Huber steine in England.
