Abstracted from book 9, Charles Wilkes land patent for the 25 Oct 1695 import of 17 persons that included William Ofell, John Ofell, and Hannah Offell. (Cavaliers and Pioneers, Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants, Vol 3, 1695-1732, p 5, On-Line Genealogy Library database: Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s, P. William Filby, Ancestry.com database)

“On the Internet one can often find that William, his wife Hannah, and their son John were born in Nansemund County Virginia but on p. 5 of ‘Cavaliers and Pioneers, Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants, Volume 3, 1695-1732’ abstracted by Nell Marion Nugent, Virginia State Library, Richmond, 1979 (Abstracted from Patent Book 9) it states that Charles Wilkes receive a land patent for the ‘imp of 17’ persons including Wm. Ofell, Jno. Ofell, Hannah Ofell. The date of the patent was 25 Oct 1695. Is it then safe to assume that they were not born in the new world?. . .In some places on the Internet, it is stated that William died in Westmoreland Connecticut. I believe that should be Virginia. Ancestry.com has a reference to his will in 1712 in Westmoreland, VA (name spelled Offile)” (Ken Offill, Offill Genforum database, #70, 2 Nov 2001) -- NOTE: Obviously this researcher mistook who was the father and who was the son! Also, this William died in Orange Co., VA. The William from Westmoreland was another William Offill -- possibly a relation to our William’s father, as John and the Westmoreland William Offill seems to be of the same generation. And if it was Westmoreland, VA and not Westmoreland, CT then he might actually have been John’s brother. -- William Offile, 23 Aug 1712. Inventory returned. Proven 23 Aug 1712 (Westmoreland County, Virginia Wills, 1654-1800, Ancestry.com database)

NOTE: Have seen him as the son of William who died in 1712, Westmoreland Co., VA -- I believe this is another branch of the Offill family, one who came to Virginia earlier -- possibly John’s uncle but I don’t believe he is his father.
