SIR GILBERT DE GAUNT, of Folkingham, Skendleby, Heckington, Edenham, and Barton-on-Humber, co. Lincoln, and Healaugh, co. York, 2nd but 1st surviving son and heir. of Sir Gilbert DE GAUNT, of the same (who died shortly before 22 January
1241/2). The King took his homage, and he had livery of his father's lands, 23 February 1241/2. He was on the King's service in Wales in 1257. On 22 June 1258 he was appointed, by the counsel of the Magnates, Constable of Scarborough Castle:
reappointed, for twelve years, 29 March 1259: he was ordered to deliver the castle to Hugh le Bigod, 19 May 1260. He was summoned for Military Service from 15 May 1244 to 6 March 1263/4, and to Parliament, 24 December 1264, by writs directed
Gilberto de Gaunt. Taking part with the Barons, he escaped capture at Northampton, 5-6 April 1264, but was taken prisoner at the surrender of Kenilworth Castle, 13 December 1266. His lands were forfeited, and given to Henry, son of Richard,
King of Almain: he was pardoned, 15 September 1268, and redeemed his lands for 3,000 marks. He died at Folkingham, 5 January 1273/4, and was buried in Bridlington Priory.
