From Wallingfords of New England: A manuscript Wallingford genealogystates that his wife's name was Elizabeth Jewett rather than Palmer, and that she was born 8 August 1652 and died 21 January 1740. A Jewett genealogy also has some confusing information by recording the marriage of an unclassified Elizabeth Jewett with Nicholas Wallingford, Jr. of Bradford on 12 March 1680. This is clearly in error, as John Palmer, in his will dated 23 August 1693, mentions his daughter Elizabeth, wife of Anthony Bennet, as well as a grandchild Nicholas Wallingford, a minor. The published Bradford VRs also record a marriage between Nicholas Jr. and Elizabeth ------- on 12 March 1680, the day their son Nicholas was born. Both this date and the date in 1678 are from records of the Essex Co. Quarterly Court. There is no other known Nicholas that this can be so it is probably just confused with the birth date of Nicholas III. The original court records should be checked to determine the truth here. BIOGRAPHY: From Wallingfords of New England: On 4 April 1682 Nicholas Wallingford, Caleb Hopkinson and others were called to testify as witnesses in a case against Nathan Webster for "killing a tame deer, for lies and for breach of the peace". Caleb, aged about 32, and Nicholas, aged about 26, "deposed that the night following the day that Webster shot the deer near where Thomas Stickney dwells, they asked Webster why he would shoot a deer with a red list around its neck. They said it was probably David Wheeler's." http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=caflory&id=I019463

WALLINGFORD
BIOGRAPHY: From Wallingfords of New England: Nicholas served in theBritish army for five weeks in 1698 during the short five year hiatus between the end of King William's War in 1697 and the beginning of Queen Anne's War in 1702. On 30 July 1701 his mother petitioned the court because she hadn't received the past wages owed to her for her sons earlier service. He was "impressed for his majesty's service" on 13 June 1698, and served with his own arms for one week under Lt. Francis Perkins. From 20 June to 13 July he servied under the command of Capt. James Fry. On 4 September 1701 the Massachusetts House granted his mother's petition and paid her 30 shillings. DEATH: From Wallingfords of New England: The earliest other probate record for the estate of Nicholas, however, is on 13 May 1736 when his widow Sarah refused to take on the administration so that it might be granted to her son Jonathan. He did take it on, and a week later brought in an inventory done by Richard Bailey, Joseph Carleton and John Hopkinson. The inventory detailed about 18 acres of land in Bradford worth about Ð180 and a list of personal belongings, the value of which wasn't totaled but came to about Ð27. In the distribution of the estate on 4 July 1737 the widow Sarah received her thirds in real estate, it being 6 1/2 acres of land worth Ð65 in Bradford. Some of the other 2/3 of the real estate in Bradford, about 11 3/4 acres worth Ð112 10s, bordered the land of Jonas Platts, whom Sarah soon married. Another 1 3/4 acres of land in Bradford worth Ð17 10s bordered land of John Hopkinson formerly belonging to Caleb Hopkinson. A note at the end of the division of the estate reads, "Buildings on the farme not belonging to the Estate as being built by the widow since the death of her husband are not apprised." This is another indication that Nicholas died long before the estate was probated. The total real estate that was divided was worth Ð130.

From Wallingfords of New England: Their family is included in the recordsof Somersworth schoolmaster Joseph Tate, made around 1767, and records all of the children below and their birth dates with the exception of Mary, who is not included. Mary is included, however, in individual family records with both of her husbands. The Charles Wallingford genealogy states that Joshua and Mary were twins, both born on 13 July 1748, which is clearly in error. Mary must have been the eldest child as in her father's 1771 will she is mentioned as his daughter Molly deceased, and it mentions her two children, the first of whom was born in 1751. Joshua's will dated 26 November 1771 was proved 11 January 1772 and mentions his wife Sarah, son Joshua (who was made executor), daughters Hannah Foss, Betty Roberts and Lydia Knight, and four grandchildren, children of his deceased children Thomas and Molly. BIOGRAPHY: From Wallingfords of New England: On 27 March 1749 Sarah and Joshua Roberts of Dover, N.H. acknowledged receipt from the widow Martha Wallingford (widow of Sarah's brother Jonathan) "Ð15 in full of ye bond lodged...it being our part or share to fall off to us". Witnesses to the receipt were Samuel Palmer and Thomas Wallingford, the latter likely being Sarah's first cousin once removed, son of John Wallingford and grandson of the emigrant Nicholas. Joshua had lands in the "new township at the head of Rochester" (probably Milton) wihch he sold shortly before he died. He was among those who signed a petition to set off Somersworth in 1729 and had pew number 13 in the Somersworth Church in 1730.

From Wallingfords of New England: Somersworth schoolmaster Joseph Taterecords four children for Joshua and Joanna born between 1768 and 1775, with the fourth dying the day she was born. They had ten children in all, and he had one or more additional children by his second wife. BIOGRAPHY: From Wallingfords of New England: Joshua was made executor of his father's estate in 1772. Joshua was a captain during the Revolutionary War. He entered service in 1777 sa a first lieutenant in Capt. James Libby's Co. of Col. Stephen Evans' Regiment. He lived in Somersworth, New Hampshire and Brunswick, Maine, showing up in the latter place in the 1810 and 1820 censuses.

From Wallingfords of New England: Secondary sources often either neglectto mention Mary as a child of Joshua and Sarah Roberts or put her last in the family. She was actually their first child. Her parentage is proven by the will of her father Joshua Roberts who names his grandchildren Samuel and Olive Roberts, children of his deceased daughter Molly Roberts.

BIOGRAPHY: From Wallingfords of New England: Job began his life in thepart of Dover which became Somersworth in 1754, and lived there until about 1772 when he removed to Rochester. He is listed in the 1790 census of both Rochester and Somersworth, perhaps because his farm straddled the border. In that census he is listed as living with two females. He was listed in Somersworth in 1800 with a male and female above 45 years and a female aged 26-45. At some point during the next ten years he moved back to Dover. He enlisted in Capt. John Tasker's Co., 31 July 1755, for the Expedition against Crown Point. Much more is written about him in the Clements genealogy.
