William de La Pole was a younger son of Michael de La Pole, 2nd earl of Suffolk, and Katherine de Stafford. In September 1415 with his father and elder brother he was at the siege of Harfleur, where he was seriously wounded and his father was killed. Later that year his elder brother was killed at the Battle of Agincourt, and he succeeded as 4th Earl.
He died at the age of 53 on May 2nd, 1450. He was buried in
Suffolk, England.

While leaving England in accordance with the king's sentence, on 1 May 1450 his ship was intercepted by the ship 'Nicholas of the Tower' in Dover Roads, and he was murdered there on 2 May 1450, his head being cut off in an open boat. His body was thrown on the beach near Dover and was buried at Wingfield. The person or persons behind his death remain a mystery
