George Washington Garton was born the 4th of November, 1844 in Mason County, Virginia, USA to Allen Dale Garton and Caroline Kimberling. He moved to Wayne County, Iowa, USA with his family in 1851 where he remained the rest of life. He attended a local rural school and then taught school for four years. For most of his life he successfully farmed and raised stock on 400 acres in Wayne County. He owned two 160 acre parcels in Clay Township. These were the northwest and southeast quarters of section 9. He had another 80 acres in the southwest corner of section 10 adjoining his southeast 160 acre parcel.
George and Mary had seven children, all born in Wayne County, Iowa, USA; four survived to adulthood. William Preston was born in 1870. An infant daughter was born about 1872 (she died that year). Allen Dale was born in 1874. He died the year Gilbert Hollister was born in 1877. Samuel Franklin was born in 1879. The twins, Edward and Telford Hal, were born in 1879 but Telford died two months later.
Originally members of the Methodist Church, George and Mary joined the Unity Baptist church about 1888. George "was active in educational matters and held offices in connection with the schools of his township for many years. " He also served as township clerk and justice of the peace for Clay Township. He joined the Masonic fraternity in January of 1866 and was an active member of his lodge. Mary died the 16th of April, 1910 in Wayne County, Iowa, USA. George died the 17th of May, 1925 in Wayne County, Iowa, USA. Both of them are buried in Cunningham Cemetery, Wayne County, Iowa, USA.
