  John Marshall went to Des Moines Co, IA in 1849 when he was about 19. His exact age is not known as it varied in all the records. In 1850 he was living with his brother James Simpson and by 1856 he was married to Martha Mutter and living with his father, John. He moved to Coffey Co, Kansas 5 Nov 1857. John is thought to be a "true Jr." as his father was probably named John Marshall Despain.

  1860 Census: Ottumwa Twp, Coffey Co, KY page 47
  1865 Census: John & family are not in the 1865 Kansas census. It is not known if he was gone or if he was missed.
  1870 Census: Ottumua Twp, Coffey Co, KS page 308. William Rhodes was living with the family.
  1875 KS State Census: Ottumwa Twp, Coffey Co, KS  page ?
  1880 Census: Ottumwa Twp, Coffey Co, KS page 4-50-1-13
  1900 Census: Ottumwa Twp, Coffey Co, KS page 11-42-11-60, age 61, widower.
  
  He served in the Civil War: Pvt. Company F, 12th Kansas Infantry. Enlistment discription:" John M. Despain, 31, 5'11", hair light, eyes light, complex light, married, nativity Greene Co, Ky, residence Ottumwa, Coffey Co., date of enlistment 27 Aug 1862, mustered in 26 Sep 1862 at Paola by T. J. Wee, mustered out with regiment June 30, 1865."
  
  He applied for a pension 1 Jun 1881 as an invalid.
