ed himdeprived Of his states on the basis Of Peter II's dec
laration Ofvassalage to the Holy See. A crusade against Ara
gón wasorganized by the pope and the French, who invaded Ca
talonia butwere repulsed by Peter and defeated at sea by Ro
ger Of Loria.Peter's Sicilian venture was unpopular with th
e Aragonesenobility and towns, and he was compelled to gran
t them wideprivileges to quell their opposition. He founde
d the firstuniversity in Aragón at Huesca. Peter was succee
ded in Aragón byhis eldest son, Alfonso III, and in Sicil
y by his second son,James (later James II Of Aragón).
